This is a gear review about the best bike multi-tool for touring, commuting, and cycling 2024.

When you are out cycling and need some minor adjustments to the brakes, chain, or gears then you need the tools to be able to do it. That’s where bike multi-tools come in. They’re small and lightweight enough to keep with you when cycling, so you always have them to hand when you need to use them. They should be a part of all Bike Tool Kits along with a good Bike Pump and can be used at home with your bike repair stand.

In this review, I’ll show you which ones are small enough but have everything you need. I have compiled a list of the best bike multi-tool for cycling and all the handy info you need to know to make sure you get the right one for you.

Best Bike Multi Tools 2024

The Bike Multi Tools for Cyclists in 2024 are:

The Topeak PT20 bike multi-tool offers 20 different functions altogether. There is also the older P20 Pro which I used for years, it has a very average tire lever instead of a knife. The full list on this mini tool is as follows:

• 5 Allen wrenches in sizes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 mm
• One 8 mm hex socket
• A T15 and a T25 Torx wrench
• A 14G, a 15G, a Mavic M7, and Shimano 4.5 mm spoke wrenches

It’s available in a choice of three different colors, including black, silver, and gold. I have the gold color and that is my favorite.

My personal experience: Although I found some of the tools a little stiff, and hence a tad difficult to pull out, once I had got them out I found that every tool I tried worked perfectly, and I was very happy with it.

The Crankbrothers M19 is an incredibly popular bike multi-tool.

As the name suggests, it offers 19 different functions. The included tools are as follows:

• An 8 mm and 10 mm open wrench

They’re all high tensile steel tools, yet the whole thing weighs a mere 6.2 oz / 175 grams.

The tools are all hardened for better durability and can really withstand wear and tear.

It comes with its own stainless steel carry case, which is perfect for preventing moisture from getting to the tools that might cause it to rust. 

It’s available in a choice of 4 colors, namely black, gold, midnight, and silver.

What’s more, it comes backed with a lifetime warranty, which is very reassuring.

Overall, this is one of the most popular compact bicycle tools on the market and the premium quality product is not too expensive.

The Topeak Mini PT30 is another quality multi-tool with 30 different tools ready at your disposal. They are as follows:

• An open end wrench for a 10 mm hex socket

This is not the lightest bike multi-tool on the market but quite good given just how many tools are included. The tools come out easily and if you ride with tubeless tires this might be a good option for you.

Overall, The Topeak Mini PT30 is a very comprehensive on-bike tool kit with everything you may need to repair your bike when out on a ride. It is one of the best multi-tools for mountain biking, especially if you use tubeless tires. I like this multi tool so much I will upgrade from the Topeak 20 to this one.

The Topeak Mini 9 has all the essential tools for something a lot more affordable. For those times when you don’t feel the need for 20 or 30 different tools, then this may be more up your alley.

The Topeak Mini 9 has 9 tools altogether, which are as follows:

• Several Allen hex wrenches in sizes 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 mm
• A number 2 Phillips screwdriver
• A T25 Torx wrench

Although it doesn’t have quite as many tools as the other multi-tools in my shortlist, it has all the most important ones.

It’s made with top quality materials and components, including alloy steel and aluminum, and has been tested to demonstrate both quality and durability.

It comes with its own neoprene bag, has a sleek profile, and is lightweight at a mere 3.2 oz / 91 grams, making it the most lightweight one on my shortlist.

What’s more, it comes backed by a 2-year manufacturer warranty.

Overall, if you are looking for an affordable bike multi tool then the Topeak Mini 9 is a good budget option is for you.

This cycling multi-tool is one of the most popular on the market for good reason. It has almost everything you will need at a reasonable price. This is one of the best multi tools for bicycle touring, just check the spoke keys fit your bike and you are good to go.

It comes with 17 different tools altogether, which are as follows:

• Hex wrenches in sizes 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8
• Chain tool and chain breaker
• Spoke wrenches in sizes 0, 1, 2, and 3
• And 8 and a 10 mm open wrench
• A Phillips head screwdriver
• A T25 Torx wrench
• A flat screwdriver

It’s made with top quality materials and components, including aluminum for the frame, and high tensile steel for the individual tools.  It has a sleek profile and weighs a mere 5.9 oz / 168 grams.

I was also impressed to learn that it comes backed by a lengthy 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Overall, this is one of the best multitool for bike touring along with the Topeak PT 30. It has everything you need and not much extra useless tools that you will not need.

The Blackburn Tradesman multi-tool has a18 different possible functions. It is another great tool for mountain biking, bicycle touring and road cycling.

The included tools are as follows:

• Several Allen key hex wrenches in sizes 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 mm
• A T25 and a T30 Torx wrench
• A Presta valve core removal tool for your tires
• Spoke wrenches in sizes 0, 1, and 2
• A disc pad spreader
• A flathead screwdriver
• A chain breaker and chain tool with awesome quick-link storage

It’s made with quality components, and weighs a mere 6.4 oz / 181 grams. What’s more, it’s also very reasonably priced, given how many tools are in it.

This is a surprisingly good tool in terms of user experience. This is because many of the tools are L-shaped, and the benefit of this is that it gives you more power from your elbow when using them. I like the quick link tool and storage that it has built in.

Overall, the Blackburn Tradesman has everything you might need and not much extra fluff. This will be the right tool for most cyclists including mountain bikers, bike tourers and road cyclists.

The Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite DX Tool Kit is a very different take on the whole multi tool concept. Instead of having all the tools attached to itself, this multi tool comprises of seperate detatchable items. And it all fits into a very compact and lightweight setup.

The Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite DX Tool Kit has a total of 15 tools which almost everything you would need to repair you bicycle when out on the road or trail.

My only concern with this type of tool is the ease at which you can lose tool bits when out on the road. While they are replaceable it could be a bit annoying to open you tool kit and find out the 6mm allen key is on the side of the road somewhere. And might want to make sure little kids stay away from this multi-tool.

Overall, the Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite DX Tool Kit is very much like an ultra compact version of the sort of tools you would have at home for bike repairs, and a very good option as a bike repair tool when cycling.

As promised, here’s your buying guide that will help you choose the best bike multi tool. Let me walk you through some of the key points to consider before you buy.

What Tools are Included

As the saying goes, the best tool is the one you have to hand. The more parts to your multi-tool, the better your chance of having everything you could want right at hand when you need it. Here are a list of all the quality tools that make up the best bike multi tools or mini tool.

Chain Tool

A Chain Breaker Tool and other chain tools including a storage place for the quick link are all great features to look for on multi tools. A broken chain can be fixed in the field if you have the correct tools and practice how to use them first.

Allen Keys / Hex Wrenches

Allen Keys, also known as a Hex Wrench or hex keys are a very necessary bike tool. Adjustments to the brakes, handlebars, seat, and steering all may need these tools. Most come with sizes between 2mm to 10mm which covers almost everything you need on the bike.

Due to the shape of the hex wrenches on multi tools they are usually not as easy to use as stand-alone Hex keys but they are good enough to job the job in the field or at home. As a result, I like to take a dedicated set of hex wrenches with me, the Park Tool Allen Keys are the best.

Phillips Head Screwdriver

These are not as common on bicycles as they once were. Hex head bolts are now much more common. Nonetheless, Phillips Head Screwdrivers are needed and even a mini tool will have at least one size while the larger more comprehensive multi tools will have two sizes.

Flat Screwdriver

Most flat head screwdrivers on multi tools are very average. Flathead Screwdrivers will do the job but are not very good in tight spaces or if you need to use it as a wedge to open something.

Torx Wrenches

Of all the tools these are the least common and the least used but when you need torx keys you need to make sure you have the right sizes on your multi tool. If you are bike touring with a Rohloff hub you may appreciate the right torx keys for the hub in case your need to repair it. Very unlikely but still. The most common size is the T25 Torx key.

Spoke Wrenches

I used to like carrying a specific tool for tightening or replacing spokes. But what a waste when I found out that the multi tool I had could do the same job. A bit of an oversight on my part.

There are many different sized spokes and nipples used on bicycles which is why most have different sized spoke wrenches. Just be sure that whatever multi tool you have that the spoke keys fits the nipples on your bike.

Tyre Valve Tools

A valve core removal tool for both a presta valve tool and regular valve tool are not used that often but a great addition on all the best multi tools. You are not so likely to need a valve core remover when cycling as you are more than likely only going to need to fix a flat tyre when cycling. But if the valve is leaking and needs to be tightened up, this will do the job.

Tire Levers

I used an older version of the Topeak 20 that came with one built in tire lever. I can confirm that the tire lever on multi tools will work. But they are a compact tool that is not the best for tire repair. They are just a bit too awkward to use and often one tire lever is not enough.

While only a couple of bike multitools have tire levers I would not be concerned if the one you want does not have them. Better to invest in a dedicated set of two or three tire levers and take them with you in your tool kit.

Other Bike Tools

A Shimano Crank Cap Tool is not that common and not usually something you need to use in the field. More like something you would use at home or take the bike to a repair shop.

A Tire Plug Tool to repair tool for tubeless tires. These tubeless tools are not common on multi tools.

The Usefulness of the Tools

The most important tools you need in your bike multitool are Allen keys of various sizes, also known as hex wrenches, a number 2 Phillips screwdriver, and a T25 Torx wrench. (More on this in my FAQ section coming up very shortly.)

If however, you want to invest in a bike multi-tool that also comes with a chain tool, then you can expect to pay a much higher sum of money.

Made with Quality Components

Your bike multi-tool needs to be a quality construction made with quality materials. Lightweight aluminum is fine for the frame of the multi-tool, but for the tools themselves you should look for steel, and ideally high tensile hardened steel at that.

Lightweight

If you intend to take your bike multi-tool on every cycle trip, then the more lightweight it is the better. I would consider any multi-tool weighing 200 grams or more to be too heavy.

Safety Lock / Case

Given how steel tools can easily scratch solid items or even rip through fabrics, it is important that the tools of your multi-tool are either kept folded out of the way when not in use.

Ideally with a safety lock, or kept in a secure case, so that they don’t cause damage to any other items you may also be carrying. A neoprene case is popular and I like them as a case.

Value for Money

A Bike multi-tool can really vary in price, including within my shortlist. Some with the bare essentials cost under $20 while others cost well over $100.

So, if you have a budget you need to stick to, I strongly recommend that you check and compare prices as you go along.
