7th September

6 miles

Lincoln (2381.3) to Trailside camp (2387.3)

I’m back in the land of cell phone service and wifi.

Packing my backpack with 8 days worth of food was not an easy task. I’ve never packed up enough food to hike 180 miles / 290km without resupplying. It’s a heavy task I face in the coming week.

I lingered in town as all the other hikers left town early. I was waiting for some of my PCT hiking buddies that were in the area to arrive. Seth and Malia or Otter and Stitch as they are known in the trail arrived around 2pm. It’s been over a year since I’ve seen them. We chatted a bit about the trail and reminisced about our trials and tribulations on the PCT. They arrived with their buddy Tyler, together they are all heading to Glacier National Park. Maybe I convinced them to join me as I hike through that area to Canada. Stay tuned.

We didn’t have too much time to chat as I wanted to make a couple of miles on trail in the afternoon. They all dropped me off at Rogers Pass around 4pm. I bid farewell and threw on my grossly overloaded backpack. Who’d have thought it possible to fit all their hiking gear, cold weather gear and enough food for 180 miles (290km) of hiking into a 48 litre Osprey backpack. I can tell you it’s possible, just.

It was cold and windy as I slowly made my way back up to the exposed ridgelines of the continental divide. I slowly added layers as I got colder and colder. Eventually I decided to set up camp on the trail among some trees that provided some shelter from the cold wind. Alone I camped, I’m unsure if I will see any other hikers in the coming week. I hope so.
