26th April 2015

Mileage 21.2

Nance Canyon (140) to Hurley Creek Campground (161.2) road walk detour

PCT Paradise Cafe

Apparently the wind and rain continued all night, so I heard from the others. I slept through it all. I set off earlier than Scotland and Kravitz. My goal was the reputedly awesome food at the Paradise Cafe. It was 12 miles of undulating terrain that stood in my way. I passed several other hikers who suspected that I was hungry. They were right.

It was 11.30am when I reached the Paradise Cafe. I demolished their largest burger, 2 beers and some Apple Pie with Ice Cream. I was comfortably full by that stage. While this was taking place other hikers arrived and we formulated a plan to get to the town of Idyllwild, 17 or so miles away.

The discussion revolved around walking along the road and taking the bypass trail into town. Details were sketchy but 9 of us set off.

The first 9.5 miles of the road walk was easy and safe with either a generous shoulder or ample room next to the road to hike. At the 9 mile mark we stopped at a store that sold Ice Cream and recommend camping about 0.5 mile further up the road in the campground.

Hot showers were enjoyed by some. As it got later in the afternoon we were joined by other road walking hikers. About 15 hikers in total. For most of the hikers it was their first 20+ mile day. We were all understandably shattered and as usual sleep came easy.

Oh and I received a trail name today. The name that people are given or adopt while on trail. But I’ll tell you about it tomorrow.

  1. How about some digital co-ordinates of where you are occasionally so we can get fix on your location. Example. 37.271933, -76.707284

  2. I’ve been following you mostly because you started the same day as my daughter and her boyfriend, and I was hoping to catch a glimpse of them in one of your awesome pictures, and today it happened!
Outside the Paradise Cafe, that’s Malia in the dark blue shirt and light blue hat, and Seth to her left. I’m pretty sure you all have been leapfrogging each other for a while…
They aren’t great at the blogging thing, so I really enjoy your entries and have been living vicariously through you! They are taking a zero in Idyllwild today…maybe you are too.
Thank you for taking the time to post your pictures and describe your journey.
    Happy trails…

    • Yes I hiked and camped with them yesterday and today. We have been leap frogging each other for days. If they are feeling ok we will hike with them again tomorrow. Great couple. I have more photos of them, if we hike together I’ll post some more for you.

Thanks for posting often, I really look forward to getting off work and catching up with your hike. I also appreciate hearing about the other hikers too. Just keep on, keepin on!!
